The English String Band brings together some of the best traditional English string players to produce an exciting sound to dance to or listen to. The band members’ pedigrees are steeped in traditional music from all over England and are, or have been, members of some of the most influential English dance bands of the last 30 years, including: Old Swan Band, New Victory Band, Katie’s Quartet, Our Northern Branch, and Grand Union.

Using a combination of fiddles, cellos and double bass the English String Band creates a full and exciting sound playing traditional English tunes from around the country, with both unison fiddle playing and harmonies to add further interest and enjoyment. All the musicians in the English String Band have been playing together in other bands and in music sessions for many years and with this have, within their own unique exciting styles, developed a strong empathy and mutual responsiveness

which gives an exciting and tight sound. Previous appearances to great acclaim include Sidmouth FolkWeek, Cambridge Folk Festival, GBH Ceilidhs, Haddenham Ceilidhs, Knees Up Cecil Sharp, Exeter Great Western Ceilidhs, Oxfolk, and Bideford Ceilidhs.

In addition to being an excellent dance band, the many other musical talents within the English String Band mean that we can also add a varied and enjoyable 'concert party' to the package, making the English String Band very popular for playing at Folk Festivals where we can play for dances and for smaller more intimate concerts, for example as we did at Sidmouth FolkWeek 2013, EATMT Traditional Music Day in September 2014 and Guildford Folk Club in February 2015.  In our concert party guise, we offer a  mixture of traditional and humorous songs (and the occasional surprise) -  solo or accompanied by fiddle, concertina, or guitar, humorous recitations and monologues, listening tune sets on one or two fiddles and on melodeon, as well as with the whole band.
